Divorce Resources

Another offering from Church Initiative, Before You Divorce “provides a “reality check” for the divorcing couple. Through videos and a workbook, this marriage crisis intervention tool provides a realistic and stark picture of the impact a decision to divorce will have on each partner and on those around them. Before You Divorce provides you with a Christ-centered, biblical strategy for stopping divorce.”
Before You Divorce

One of the best books I have ever read on the issue of children of divorce, probably THE best, is Between Two Worlds: The Inner Lives of Children of Divorce by Elizabeth Marquardt. This is the home page for that book. The site includes information about the book as well as full survey data for the survey the book was based on.

“Church Initiative is a nondenominational, nonprofit ministry, equipping thousands of churches in all 50 states, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Australia and several other countries. The ministry produces and publishes a variety of video-based curricula, focusing on the small group format.” Those include Divorce Care, Divorce Care 4 Kids, Single & Parenting, Grief Share, Before You Divorce and others.

“The Coalition is a non-partisan coalition of divorce reform leaders, marriage educators, domestic violence experts, scholars, and concerned citizens dedicated to supporting efforts to reduce unnecessary divorce and promote healthy marriages.” The blog includes articles on The Impact of Divorce, The Cost of Divorce to Taxpayers, the Parental Divorce Reduction Act, Non-Legislative Efforts to Reduce Divorce, The Breakdown of Marriage, The Benefits of Marriage, Failure of Current Divorce Laws and the Impact of Single Parenting.

“Susan Boyan and Ann Marie Termini are co-founders of the Cooperative Parenting Institute (CPI). The CPI is an organization whose mission is to promote the healing and enhancement of family relationships. The Institute offers a wide range of services and resources to assist families as well as professionals with a successful transition from a one to two home family. The professionals at CPI are dedicated to educating the public, judges, legal and mental health professionals on the effects of divorce and time-sharing arrangements on the development of children. “

The author of this blog explains, “Darn Divorce, is a collection of random thoughts and news on the Dreaded D-Word. Some content may appear silly or cynical, but in no way am I undermining the distressing effects of divorce…Sometimes its just better to laugh it off, that’s all.” The articles on this page were slightly out-of-date at last check.
Darn Divorce
This site offers “practical advice to help you know how to deal with divorce, and help your children deal with divorce too.” Articles are provided in categories including Deciding to Divorce, Infidelity Advice, Divorce Steps and Planning, Child Custody and Support, Effects of Divorce on Children, Parenting During Divorce, and Do It Yourself Divorce.
Deal With Divorce
“Long before it was in vogue or politically correct to question the sanity of rampant divorce, Michele Weiner-Davis, M.S.W., best-selling author and marriage therapist, took a stand. She believes that the vast majority of divorces in our country are absolutely unnecessary because most relationship problems are solvable.”
Divorce Busting
Divorce Care, like DC4K, is a product of Church Initiative and follows the same 13 week cycle that DC4K does. It follows the same topics as the DC4K program allowing parents and children to discuss what they are both learning. The Divorce Care website explains, “DivorceCare is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. Don’t go through separation or divorce alone.”
Divorce Care
When I first started studying children of divorce, I came across a site called Divorce Statistics Collection which is a great collection of statistical information related to divorce and children of divorce. That site is no longer updated. Instead, this blog has taken on the role of being the place where “divorce statistics, and citations and abstracts of studies on the incidence, causes and effects of divorce” are accumulated and reported.
Divorce Statistics
This blog was slightly out of date at last check, but it is from Sharon Shenker who is a coach for individuals and families experiencing relationship difficulty. Despite the fact that the site is not actively updated, there are some interesting and useful articles on the site for people who have divorced or are having difficulties in their marriage.
Divorce Support Plus
I wasn’t quite sure where to file this one since it hadn’t been updated since 2010 at last check, but this is the homepage of Jen Abbas, the author of Generation Ex: Adult Children of Divorce and the Healing of Our Pain. Despite the fact that it no longer appears to be current, there are over 200 articles on this site (check the archive), and since I am a big fan of Ms. Abbas’ book, I have included a link to this site as well.
Generation Ex Files
“This site is dedicated to the children who are suffering under the hands of HAP parents. We strive to educate the public about this growing problem in hopes of getting help to the HAP parent, and to the suffering kids. HAP parents may not realize they have HAP. It’s up to friends, family & the community to educate them and encourage them to seek help…Hostile Aggressive Parenting or HAP is a serious form of child maltreatment and abuse, and is encountered in most high conflict child-custody disputes and is often used as a tool to align the child with one parent during litigation.”

“InStep Ministries is a…faith-based nonprofit ministry dedicated to serving the community by providing practical, Biblical resources, support and counsel to single, divorced and remarried individuals, their families and the churches who minister to them. InStep is pro-marriage not pro-divorce.”

“The Our Family Wizard is based in Minneapolis, MN. In 2001, founder Paul Volker turned to the Internet looking for a site designed to help him more effectively manage parenting time schedules between himself and his ex-wife. When he couldn’t find what he was looking for, he developed and launched OurFamilyWizard.com. The site provides the best possible schedule management tools for parents in divorced and separate households to allow them to communicate more effectively. To date, judges in over 35 states have required parents in high-tension divorces to utilize the site to help reduce conflict and move costly cases out of the court system.”

“Because most people do not know about PA & HAP until they experience it, the idea of Parental Alienation Awareness Organization was put forth to help raise awareness and provide education about this growing problem of mental and emotional child abuse. Our goal is to educate the general public, schools, police, mental health counselors, religious leaders, as well as the perpetrators who may be unaware of the effect of alienating behaviors, and how these behaviors harm children. Our goal is education. We believe that with education comes understanding, and the will and power to stop the emotional and mental abuse of children.”
